Camping in South Australia

Along the Murray River

The Murray River

Murray River National Park - Lyrup Flats

This region is situated to the south-east of Renmark.  There are numerous camping areas right on the banks of the river, which offer good shade and shelter.  Don't be discouraged by the desolate road into the region, once you reach the river, the red gums and river make a relaxing and scenic backdrop.  No facilities are provided.

Murray River National Park - Katarapko

Katarapko is very similar to Lyrup Flats with camping areas along the banks of Katarapko creek, one of the Murray's major backwaters..

Loch Luna Game Reserve - Near Cobdogla

North of Cobdogla take the road to Morgan and then turn left onto a track just after Napper's Bridge which crosses the water flowing into Lake Bonney.  The camping areas in the Game Reserve are shady and quiet.  No facilities are provided.  Camping is also allowed just off of the main Barmera to Kingston-on-Murray road.  There are numerous places right on the river banks to put up your tent.

Riverfront - Waikerie

Just to the east of Waikerie there are some quiet camping sites.  Make your way down to the river's edge and camp opposite some of the rivers sandstone cliffs.

Hogwash Bend - East of Cadell

Hogwash is one of the river's most popular camping spots.  The river here has a sandy beach, and during the Christmas holidays it is hard to find a spot to put up your tent.  At other times however it is a great spot to spend a bit of time.

Cordola Campground - near Pelican Point and Lakeside Campground - near Purnong

Small camping areas with sites near the river's edge
